A Day of Racing and Arts at Mayfair

A Day of Racing and Arts at Mayfair

On Saturday, June 2nd, MAE came out to the first event Mayfair Grand Prix and Community Festival. It was a beautiful day with clear skies, a nice breeze, and air filled with music and the scent of festival food—delicious gyros, sweet water ice, and just about anything fried. Right down the street from our tent was the stage where Philly Heart Soul jammed out, along with other local performers. Right next to them was the track where go-karts zipped and weaved. The exciting race included a host of local celebrities like boxer Julian Williams, FOX29 reporter Hank Flynn, and local politicians. Even NASCAR drivers Daniel Hemric and Darryl “Bubba Wallace Jr. joined the competition!

The best moments we had were talking to Mayfair and Northeast Philly residents about what they love and what we love—the arts! Many were excited, just like us, about the new Mayfair Theater. We hope to see some of you at our upcoming events.

Check out the photos and highlights of our day in Mayfair below!

Here’s me (your local MAE intern) at our table! We decked it out with posters and photo albums of our past events. To the left of me is custom sound equipment, built by our own Vladimir Atamanenko, Ataman for short. Conveniently, Ataman’s own sound equipment is hiding him from the camera (manned by Project Director Mikhail Zorich).

But Ataman couldn’t hide from the camera for long! Here he is with some local Mayfair residents. Our new friend in the red cap was interested in discussing Ataman’s sound equipment. His furry friend was more interested in leaning against Ataman for some petting.

Barbera Bear also stopped by to support the arts!

Right next to our tent was fellow art lover and painter, Sugar Muffin Creations! I couldn’t help but buy one of her adorable prints, a corgi dressed as Thor. Follow her @SugarMuffinzCreationz on facebook to see more of her work.

Here’s our tent again! When we weren’t talking with festival goers, Ataman passed the time by giving me impromptu singing lessons. We sang along with the bands and practiced breathing techniques. Ataman could also be spotted dancing in the street, several times.

Thank you to the community of Mayfair for putting on a great event! Everyone here at MAE had a fun-filled afternoon. We left smiling, knowing that MAE and the arts are welcome in Mayfair.
